Brestin the days of Lapérouse: a tableau of the 17th century
A faithful reconstruction of port life in the days of the great scientific expeditions
We are in 1785, Louis XVI wishes to correct and complete the mapping of the planet, but also wishes to establish new trading posts. James Cook has paved the way, there's no question of leaving him without competition.
Jean-François de Lapérouse, accompanied by a scientific elite, has been appointed to lead this large-scale expedition.
The ultimate ambition: circumnavigate the globe.
The ships Boussole and Astrolabe will be on this adventure.
The outcome of this expedition was shrouded in mystery for many years. Several search parties were sent out, including one that set off from Brest on 28 September 1791 with two frigates La Recherche and L'Espérance.

A tableau punctuated by many moments of spectacle
Brest 1785: soldiers, sailors, merchants, workmen and prostitutes are busy preparing the ’Astrolabe andLa Boussole. It's the big day of departure for the lands of the South Pacific. On this very quay that echoed with the paces of the King's greatest mariners, at the heart of the historicport of Penfeld, 200 actors in period costume relive the feverish activity of victualling a ship at the end of the 18th century… While strolling all day at the heart of this tableau, the public will be enraptured in unexpected moments of spectacle, for a breathtaking journey back into maritimehistory.
In front of the historic replica of an 18th century three-master, you will take part in the victualling and preparation of a boat, the various port activities, the entertainment of the day, with a festive party to end the day.
On the Subsistances quay, you will be invited to wander through the heart of this reconstruction in the form of several playlets transporting you back to the middle of the 18th century, at the peak of the French sailing navy.
