The Tonnerres de Brest 2012 maritime festival in unison with the transatlantic KrysOceanRace.
In 2008, during the Brest de maritime festivals, the public was thrilled, to put it mildly, when the Thomas Coville passed through the narrows and beat the North Atlantic crossing record: a brilliant and unforgettable moment, both for the skipper and his fans, the arrival of trimaran Sodeb’O escorted by a horde of boats to safety, where tens of thousands of onlookers waited.
Four years on, Les Tonnerres de Brest 2012 will once more be the settings for a large-scale event with the arrival, in the middle of the festival, of the first Krys Ocean Race, a transatlantic race organized as part of the MOD70 international circuit. Six world-renowned skippers , departing from New York on their 20th century monotype trimarans, and scheduled to arrive in mid-July, right in the middle of the Tonnerres de Brest 2012....six ultra-modern trimarans turning up amidst some 2,000 traditional sailing boats: the odds are good that enthusiasts of boats and the sea will be absolutely thrilled!
The MOD70 is a new generation of strictly uniform (monotype) 70ft trimarans. Their design seeks to combine modern technology, high performance, safety, reliability, and controlled costs. While 10ft longer than its predecessor, the ORMA (21.2m instead of 18.28), the MOD70 is a narrower vessel. Displacing 6.3 tonnes, it can carry up to 409m² of sail and is characterised by curved foils and a folding mast. With a maximum speed of 37 knots, the flotilla will sail from New York to Brest in 6-7 days as part of the Krys Ocean Race, arriving at the height of the Tonnerres de Brest 2012 on 13th or 14th July.
